Reality Hits

“Come and join my painting class, Viola. I’ve seen your drawings and I know how demanding the job can be. This will help you relax.” It was 2004 and my colleague Carel Frauenfelder, an artist himself, was convinced this could be my next creative move. Especially after my uncle and legal guardian had passed away and I started taking care of my aunt, I was yearning for structure as well as freedom. It took another year, but in 2005 I surrendered to the calling.

How to find truth

Carel became my teacher for a while and I started painting realistic landscapes with oil paint on canvas. It felt amazing to work with these materials.

I discovered that I really needed to clear my head in order to surrender to the canvas and the brush. And yet, while the pressure of work and the care for my aunt increased, I found myself struggling with realism.

I somehow felt that my work wasn’t true enough. Once I started photography, that feeling increased, and so I found myself moving to surrealism.

Putting business first

Unfortunately, in mid-2006 I suffered a severe burn-out and an outplacement trajectory. To keep myself active, I bought a book about HTML and started building websites from scratch. It jumpstarted my path as an independent entrepreneur.

Now, I was able to merge my background in graphic design with my new-found HTML knowledge, yet I focused primarily on creating the visual identity of new and innovative entrepreneurs.

Setting up my own business took up so much of my energy that all my canvases and painting materials, well-packed, disappeared into the basement.

“It is my mission to bring people closer to art, themselves and their essence.”
