Abstract View
The unexpected news that Carel had passed away in 2010 hit me like a bomb. It was the trigger to liberate my paintings from my basement late at night. When the protective plastic was removed, my home once again filled with the enduring energy of creation and hidden passion. This was the moment that I started painting again. Somehow, I felt a brief pull to create realistic sea views with pastels. Even though this was no more than a fling, this period brought me to acrylics, which became a true love of mine to work with.
Finding new love
In 2016, after a big project, there finally was time and space to focus entirely on my creativity. For six months there was nothing but painting. In no time, a truly good friend completely transformed my flat into a beautiful studio. Little did I know how this would awaken an unexpected passion for a different kind of creation within me!
I found a love for abstract art, something I never really appreciated until I started creating it myself. I had always really enjoyed sculpting, yet I also longed to play with colours. I decided to merge these two joys of mine, and so I started sculpting a surface on canvas, after which I added a multitude of colourful layers of acrylic paint.
Energy Portals
When I was a little girl, I had these paintings in my head. I could see them vividly. They felt like destinations I could travel to, especially during the countless hours of confusion I felt while being in my room, looking at the grey concrete walls. My windows would turn into this energy field, a world I could step into to find my superpowers to support me with my daily life.
I feel so grateful to be able to go into these places as a grown-up as well. I call them energy portals. Now, I am able to record what I see onto the canvas. As soon as I finish, I look and almost can’t believe what I created. Each painting is a journey into essence.
"When I start to paint, I step into a zone. First I add texture onto the canvas as a base. I let myself be guided while I shape it the surface. Then, I add the second layer: colours. I close my eyes and intuitively pick a main colour. It’s going to be a blue day."
